About
A phrasebook for English speakers living in the Czech Republic: what to say in real situations, how it sounds, whether it is polite or casual, and why it is said that way. Practice uses spaced repetition, and corrects missing accents in red rather than marking the whole answer wrong.
how phrases are made
The phrases in First words were written by hand. Every other situation is written by an AI model (Claude, by Anthropic) and then checked before it is shown:
- Every Czech word is checked against a Czech spelling dictionary, which catches missing accents.
- Polite and casual forms are checked so they are not mixed in one phrase.
- Casual spoken forms are kept separate from standard written Czech.
- Each example has to use the phrase it illustrates.
- A second, different AI model translates each phrase back into English and grades it. Phrases it doubts are held back.
Only phrases that pass every check are published. They have not yet been checked by a native Czech speaker, and each phrase page says how it was made. Pronunciation guides are generated by rules from the Czech spelling.

Use Report a problem with this phrase at the bottom of any phrase page. Reports are read and fixed by hand. When three signed-in learners report the same phrase, it is hidden until it has been fixed.
the czech tutor
Signed-in learners can ask the chat tutor questions. Its answers come from an AI model as you ask, are not checked, and can be wrong.
your data
Sign-in is handled by Clerk. This site stores only your account id and your practice history: which phrases you have practised, your answers and when each phrase is due again. Reports can be sent without an account.
